I have been active in the outdoors for as long as I remember: I was still an infant the first time my parents took me camping. I have wonderful memories of a childhood in California full of hikes, camping, fishing, searching for fossils at the beach, and other adventures. When I moved to Texas at 13, it because really clear really quick that the clothing I wore would either make my outdoor experience wonderful or absolutely awful. I spent as much time as possible outside and even had a summer gig as a camp counselor. Staying comfortable in the summer heat was a challenge year after year and I dreamed of cooler climates because I just didn't see any way around it.
I started toying with the idea of making outdoor apparel around 2009 when we moved to a lakeside town with hiking trails and the outdoor lifestyle I dreamed of, but I didn't know if I could really do it. I have been every size imaginable as an adult and I always struggled to find clothing that would help me get outside; more often than not, I would find myself borrowing my husbands too-big technical tops so I wouldn't be covered in sweat the entire time. I had finally decided enough was enough in 2018. I was just pregnant enough with my son to develop stomach bloat and I went on a weekend hiking trip with a friend. I could not find a shirt long enough to cover my stomach and I was uncomfortable the entire time we hiked. It was cold, but I was hot; I would tug at my tshirt and my too short jacket and could not focus on my hike (causing some stumbles which ended with a pulled disc in my back). On the 6 hour drive back home, I thought back to all the other times I was uncomfortable on hikes and decided I would use my apparel design background to do something about it. I have my BFA in Fashion Design, an MFA in Design with a focus on fashion, and I've been in the industry for nearly 20 years; I had the experience and knowledge to start the company, I just needed to do it. Ottomatic Threads launched in early 2020 and I haven't looked back since.

We produce using sustainable manufacturing practices. We also host sewing camps and classes discussing sustainability and teaching kids how to recycle fabric/supplies.
We donate 1% of profits to national parks. We partner with non-profits (like WildHerNess) on collaborations that benefit their foundations.
Goal is by the end of 2024 to only use materials made of recycled products.
We are currently researching unisex design options in the outdoor apparel space. We want to do more than offer a unisex tshirt sizing option, but with a smaller team, it's taking longer than we'd like.
All designs are available in sizes XS-6X with goals to expand to 10X by the end of 2023.
